Sophomore Wins New Car In Attendance Award Program
May 18, 2012
Sitting in a crowd with 400 hundred other students, the anticipation grew more and more as each name was called.
“It’s nerve wracking,” sophomore Matthew Gilbert said. “You never think that you’re going to win something.”
Out of the 400 kids, five students, including Gilbert who won, were called down to attempt to win the prizes that were offered to them as part of the Every Child, Every Seat, Every Day attendance incentive program.
“Students have to have perfect attendance, and for each nine weeks your name gets put into the raffle once,” Principal Donna Grant said. “The winner gets Air Hogs tickets, Chick-Fil-A for a year, a new car provided Graff Chevrolet and Texas Trust Credit Union will pay for the tax, title and license.”
Gilbert said he won’t need to depend on other people for rides now.
“This will be a luxury,” he said. “My mom drives me to school.”
He wasn’t the only one shocked about the surprising gift; his mother said it was unbelievable at first.
“He just got his driver license in February so this is exciting” mother Kaye Gilbert said.
Just for having good attendance, he now has his own official car.
He said, “We’re trying to save money so anything that you can get for free is good.”
