Walking into the mirrored dance studio, the girls hear One Republic’s song Secrets playing in the background as they prepare themselves for two long hours of a sweat destined practice.
“I’m excited for the Spring Show,” senior Lieutenant Jackee Lazcano said. “It’s my opportunity to express myself and my passion for the one thing that I love the most, dance.”
The Chey-Anne Spring Show will be Saturday, April 14 at 7:30 p.m., in the new theater. The show was sold out last year.
“Last year was our biggest show ever,” Captain Kristen Gonzalez said. “The show was sold out for the first time I remember. People were sitting on the floor. We are in the new theater now, which is huge, but I expect it to be sold out again.”
Tickets, which are $7, are on sale now and can be bought from any team member or in the Chey-Anne room.
“This show will be way better than the years before because we have a good team and a good director,” Gonzalez said. “We have made it through a long year including a director change at the start of the year. Even after all that, at the end of the day, we still manage and we stick together.”
The team officers and lieutenants, and Director Ashley Farrar came up with the theme.
“The theme is ‘We’ve Only Just Begun,’” Gonzalez said. “It’s just saying how even though it’s the end and that this is our, the seniors, last performance we’re welcoming you to show you the beginning to the end.”
The performance gives the team a chance to demonstrate their skills.
“It shows what we have accomplished through the whole school year: from the bonding of the team to the girls improving,” Gonzalez said. “The technique of the team has advanced from summer camp to now.
Grand Prairie High School’s drill team, the Geepettes, are guest performing at the show for the first time in school history.
“I decided to ask the Geepettes if they would like to perform,” Farrar said. “It was something that my high school did when I was on drill team and it really promotes unity within the community. (This) is just one of several things I would like to implement into the program from my experiences as a drill teamer.”
Along with the Geepettes coming to visit the show, the Chey-Annes will also be attending the Grand Prairie’s Spring Show.
“I know that their Director Kristin Villanueva is excited about the opportunity for her girls to perform,” Farrar said. “She thinks it’s a great idea. The Chey-Annes will also perform at the Geepettes show. Hopefully, it will become a tradition that will continue on for many years.”
One of the only differences in performing groups will be Men of South since they have not had it this year.
“We still have a wide range of performers like Amanda’s Dance Express, the Asian Pacific Club and Show Choir,” Farrar said. “The Geepettes are a new addition.”
Lazcano said the show is good advertisement for the team, who has a try-out meeting on April 5, at 7 p.m. in the J-Wing Art Gallery; the try-out is only for incoming 9th graders and current 9-11 graders who did not go through the try-out process in December.
“I think after the show, more girls will want to try out because they’ll see what we work for during the year,” she said.
Gonzalez said she is looking forward to her last show.
“It’s going to be emotional just to know that it is all over; that that was my last time to shine,” Gonzalez said. “There is going to be a lot of tears that night, but overall it’s going to be a night to remember and cherish forever.”
